Reflecting on January, the 2025 Narrative so far

Updated: Feb 11

Aioli, everyone. We hope you have all been well. In the spirit of sharing more personal narratives on the blog this year, we want to take a moment to reflect on how January went, reflecting how our January 2025 narrative went. We want to make this a part of our holding ourselves accountable process, as we shared in the last blog post, if you haven't checked that out, please make sure you take a read here Crafting your Narrative for 2025, Sharing Our Plans and Motivations.

At the end of each month, we want to take the chance, to sit down with you all to account for how much we have grown and progressed in terms of our dreams and goals for the year, but also to all celebrate our achievements, no matter how small they may be. We want to ensure that we are all achieving our milestones along the way and doing our best to focus on the positives, so it will set us in good stead looking forward to the rest of the year. In essentials, our monthly reviews will hold us accountable for our actions and get us focused on what is to come. We hope you will find these helpful just as they will help us stay accountable for the year that is to come.

Starting the January 2025 narrative

January, started with the notion of fresh opportunities and as the cliche goes, a new year new me. But we knew even before the start of the new year, that we would be going back into studies in late January with our new degree, so we were excited to see where it would take us and the new friends we would meet along the way.

But unlike other years, this was the first time in about 5 years that we didn't focus on making any New Year's resolutions. While resolutions are great tools to use, we had the feeling that they would overload us with too many goals of trying to achieve for the year, so we settled on some basics, like trying to achieve good grades in our subjects and hopefully doing up our resume and securing a good job.

We have nothing against New Year's resolutions, and if you have made some and are sticking to them, we are so proud of you, but for this year, we thought we would try a different approach. This year our main focus is our studies and if we can achieve some of our ideals outside of that then all the better.

In the Middle

In the middle of January, there was a lot of preparation for study, so purchasing textbooks and starting on readings. If there is one thing, they will tell you about studying law, it is a lot of reading, so much so we have gone off novels, but we still try to read a chapter here and there where we can.

We also signed up at a local university study centre, which is a part of the local council library, so if we need to, we have a quiet place we can go to study and they have so many helpful services on offer, such as quiet study rooms, study advisers, printing and networking opportunities. We wish we had something like this when we studied the first time around but we thankful for it this time around.

At the End

The end of January culminated in a series of celebratory events, from celebrating Australia Day to attending O Week workshops to officially starting university classes.

Every Australia Day, we celebrate by playing cricket and indulging in a BBQ at our neighbour's house. It is never a serious match because a lot of people like to drink throughout the day, but it is a great time to have a meal and catch up with everyone in the community. We also have a lot of fun dressing up and indulging in some light-hearted sledging, probably our favourite is on ya Garry!

But thanks to monsoon weather, this year's the cricket match was washed out just after 7 balls and we ended up playing darts instead. A lot of us were admittedly terrible at darts but we slowly got the hang of it as the rounds went by minus all the hits to the door which the dart board was hanging on.

In comparison, O Week was a lot of online refresher seminars about academic skills and how we can look after ourselves going through the trimester. The university's learning centre was so great to put these on for us. During O Week, we made it a point to email our teachers to introduce ourselves along with any tutors and support staff. While we are studying online again, we have tried our best to remain on top of our studies.

At the end of the month, we officially started our classes. We got to meet a lot of our classmates, where they come from and all our aspirations in partaking study our degrees. We have 10 weeks of study ahead of us for this trimester, so please wish us well.

Going Forward

Moving forward into February, we are expecting our studies to ramp up coming into our first assessment pieces and then our first break period. We are currently finishing up on week 2 of the trimester, and so far, we are keeping our heads above water, but we feel like we are learning so much as we go along.

While we haven't fully decided in what direction we want to go with our law degree, we know there are so many opportunities out there, and we will work it out the more progress with the study.

Outside of study, we are looking forward to seeing what fun and opportunities February has to bring. At the moment we have kind of nicknamed it the month of love, since Valentine's Day is coming up and we just celebrated our parent's wedding anniversary. But if you would like to recap your January, please drop us a comment with your reflections and achievements.
