"How to Plan and Prepare for a Successful Graduation Ceremony"

Our Complete Guide to Planning and Preparing for a Successful Graduation Ceremony: Reflections on Preparing for Our Ceremony and What We Had to Consider

Aioli everyone, we hope you have all been well, we have finally made it to graduation time, our graduation ceremony is in Adelaide next week, so this week we are going to share how we went about planning for our graduation ceremony trip in hopes it can help you all out too if you have your graduation coming up too.

If you have been following this blog for a bit or if you are new here, we started our bachelor's degree in April of 2018. We have now come full circle, graduating as a part of the April 2024 cohort with the University of South Australia, it has been a few years in the making, but we have finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel.

After we share a quick preface, we will share some of the things we have had to consider under some broad headings, keeping in mind that for the duration of our degree, we were an off-campus student, and we have never actually visited the campus before, never met any of our teachers, so this trip will be a new venture for us all, as we have never been to Adelaide before either.

Preface

As we have just shared, this will be a new experience for us all, as we have never been as far south as Adelaide before let alone have seen the campus, but we have a feeling it is going to be a lot colder than our usual winters here in the north of Queensland so it will be fun to experience the temperature drop.

But as per usual we can only share our own experiences, these are just some of the things we have to consider, living in another state and having to travel to attend the graduation ceremony, planning and preparing for the trip and the ceremony has been key.

#1: Travel and Accommodation

Congratulations on your graduation, this is an amazing achievement after all the work you have put in to get this far, but if you are off campus, are you going to be able to travel and afford accommodation to attend the graduation ceremony?

This is a big question we had to consider since we live so far off campus, but it is not every day you get to wear the cap and gown and celebrate your graduation. For us, this involved seeing if we could afford to book flights and secure accommodation near the venue. Luckily after some research and planning, we did it, but if this is definitely, something you want to try to organize in advance if you can, the more time you can give yourself to plan, the better the results.

It also doesn't hurt to search your university's website for any other fees or options when it comes to graduation. Most universities will have side vendors that they like to work with for their graduations and graduates, e.g. photographers, framing, gifts, gowns etc. If you are aware of these, you can plan out and factor in these expenses too,

#2: Graduation Outfit

While the cap and gown are a must for any graduation outfit, what will you be wearing underneath to complete the look? But before you get carried away searching for the perfect outfit, make sure you check with your university for the dress code, so you're completely prepared for the special day.

There are so many options that are available, from dresses to jumpsuits, to power suits and business chic outfits, at the end of the day, we opted for comfort since we knew we would have to be going from various buildings and receptions throughout the day, but along with your outfit, you should also factor in the accessories you might like to wear along with your footwear.

Personally, we opted for a green flowy dress, and kept it simple with limited accessories, and small-heeled sandals. For us, there was some real significance in choosing the colour green for our dress, green was my Dad's favourite colour, and while we wish he could be here to share in the special day, wearing this favourite colour is our nod to him.

But if you are stuck for inspiration, there are plenty of bloggers who have done graduation inspirational posts, one of our recent favourites posts is on Lauren Norris's blog at thelaurennorris.com, she graduated herself last year, but her recent post has so many options that can help give you some inspiration.

#3: Graduation Day Schedule

Before you embark on your graduation day, please check in with your university for a schedule of the day, so you know what you can expect, and know where you should be at what time of the day, there is nothing worse than not knowing what is going on and being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Keeping a copy of the day's schedule with you can help you and your guests stay on time and plan your celebrations accordingly.
